We are ready to jump

Novi Sad, Thursday February 22nd, 2007

Novi Sad celebrated a feast of high jump tonight. The message of citizens of Novi Sad to participants of the 3rd Eurotop was very clearly stated: “We are ready to jump.”

Novi Sad audience had the opportunity to see ten contestants coming from three continents (Europe, Asia and North America) i.e. eight countries (Cuba, Canada, Israel, Russia, Italy, Finland, Slovenia and Serbia) fighting the battle for the new meeting record of 232 cm. Although they failed in that intention, expectations of approximately 4000 spectators in the Great Hall of SPC “Vojvodina” were nevertheless fulfilled.

The winner of the 3rd Eurotop, Victor Moya from Cuba, finally beat Oscari Frossen from Finland, clearing the bar at 228 and entering the 4-5 place of the eternal list of EUROTOP.

At the first two Eurotop meetings better results were acquired by Nicola Ciotti (Italy), owner of the meeting record of 231 cm, than the winner of the 1st Eurotop Dragutin Topic (Serbia), and the holder of the second place at the same event, Pavel Fomenko (Russia) with 230 cm. Current competition best result of 228 cm was last year acquired by Kyriakos Ioannou from Cyprus.

The 3rd place at today’s event required the height of 227 cm; that was acquired by Viacheslav Voronin (Russia), while the same result brought the 4th place to Marc Bosswell (Canada).

Contestant from Serbia, Branko Đuričić, acquired the best result of this season of 220 cm that at the same time represents his personal record, also being the only contestant that participated at all three Eurotop competitions.

Russian winter suits Ivana

Moscow, February the 14th, 2007

Russian winter rules in Moscow area where temperatures fall down to – 20 below 0. Right there, many years ago, French emperor Napoleon experienced one of the greatest defeats in history (in the battle of Borodin), that has latter been justified by famous Russian winter. Au contrary to Napoleon’s army, this winter our young athletes win battles against their coevals from former Soviet republics.

Members of our little colony in IAAF development center train and compete extensively, providing us with some good news that raises content. The first information form Moscow came as a question asked by Ivica Možek: “What do you think about 6.53?” and the answer to it was: “Well that’s the new record in long jump!” So Ivana Španović is the one responsible for our good mood.

On Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 at the memorial competition dedicated to famous Russian and Soviet athletes Diachkov and Ozolin, our most prospective female athlete Ivana Španović was acclaimed to be the best contestant. As a memory of this success she was presented a sculpture of Nike, Greek goddess of victory.

Ivana obtained the best result of her career, representing senior, elder junior and younger junior Serbian record. Besides that, this is currently the best world result in elder junior and younger junior categories, ensuring Ivana the 17th place on world senior’s list, being the qualifying result for European Indoor Championship that is to be held from March 2nd till March 4th 2007 in Birmingham, GB.

Besides the record jump of 6.53 in the 5th series, Ivana jumped 6.52 in the 3rd series, obtaining the result that also represents a record (her previous personal record of 6.48 was obtained on February 5th, 2006 in Budapest).

The series she showed this time is worthy of the greatest world champions and up to now the best in her career (see the attachment PDF(120 KB)).

The attachment of this text contains complete results PDF(216 KB), as well as several photos of Ivana taken in Moscow and earlier during this winter season.
